President Donald Trump just gave Apple a heads up that they might be in for a 25% tariff if they don’t start making iPhones in the good ol’ US of A. In a recent Truth Social post, Trump made it clear that he expects all iPhones sold in the US to be manufactured right here on American soil, not in India or anywhere else. And if Apple doesn’t comply, they better be ready to pay up. Trump’s message to Apple was loud and clear: “If that is not the case, a Tariff of at least 25% must be paid by Apple to the US Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The news of Trump’s warning hit the financial markets hard. US equity futures took a dip, especially Nasdaq 100 contracts which saw the biggest fall. Apple shares also dropped by 4% in response to the announcement. It’s no secret that Trump has been on a mission to bring more manufacturing jobs back to the US, and Apple has been a frequent target in his campaign. While Apple currently makes most of its iPhones in China and has no domestic smartphone production, the company has made promises to increase its workforce in the US and invest billions in the country over the next four years.
Trump has been putting the pressure on Apple for a while now, even going as far as asking the company’s CEO, Tim Cook, to halt production in India and focus on bringing manufacturing back to the US. It seems like Trump is really serious about this whole “Make America Great Again” thing, and he’s not holding back when it comes to getting companies like Apple on board. As for Apple’s response to Trump’s threat, well, they haven’t said anything just yet. But it looks like they might have some tough decisions to make in the near future.
