Thief Steals $300 from St. John’s University Church in Queens, NYPD Reports

A bold thief snuck into St. Thomas More Church on the St. John’s University campus in Queens and made off with $300 in cash, according to the NYPD. This audacious act took place on Wednesday, December 11, when the suspect entered the church at 80-00 Utopia Pkwy through an unlocked door. Once inside, they found a box containing the money, grabbed the cash, and quickly escaped on foot in an unknown direction.

University spokesperson Brian Browne revealed that the suspect was caught on surveillance footage taking the money from an office desk. Browne emphasized the importance of safety and security on the campus, stating, “The safety and security of our campus community are essential, and our investments in Public Safety and our cooperative relationship with law enforcement help ensure that.”

Suspect Description and Police Appeal

The NYPD has released images of the suspect, who was seen wearing a blue hooded jacket and a black vest during the theft. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS. It is crucial to identify the suspect and bring them to justice for this crime.

University’s Response and Campus Safety

Reflecting on the incident, Browne noted that churches are intended to be safe and welcoming places for all individuals, often leaving their doors open for worshipers. However, this openness can unfortunately attract criminal activity, as seen in this isolated scenario. The university is committed to maintaining a secure environment for everyone on campus and will continue to collaborate with law enforcement to uphold safety measures.

Community Cooperation for a Safer Environment

Incidents like these serve as a reminder of the importance of community cooperation in maintaining a safe environment. By staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities, individuals can contribute to preventing similar crimes in the future. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring the security of public spaces like churches and educational institutions.

In times of adversity, it is essential for communities to come together and support one another. By working hand in hand with law enforcement and remaining proactive in safeguarding public spaces, we can create a safer and more secure environment for everyone. Let us stand united in protecting our shared spaces and upholding the values of safety and respect.
