Queens Man Sentenced to 7 Years for Attempted Kidnapping – DA Announcement
A Queens man, James McGonagle, 27, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for attempting to kidnap a 5-year-old boy off a sidewalk in Richmond Hill in July 2021, as announced by the Queens District Attorney on Tuesday.
Attempted Kidnapping Incident
The incident occurred when McGonagle parked his red Nissan near the intersection of Hillside Avenue and Bessemer Street around 8 p.m. He attempted to grab the child, who was walking with his family, and force him into the backseat of his car. However, the boy’s mother and siblings intervened, pulling him to safety through the vehicle’s front passenger window, according to the district attorney’s office.
District Attorney’s Statement
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz expressed her condemnation of McGonagle’s actions, stating, “The defendant needlessly terrorized this child, his family, and the entire community with his reckless behavior. With this sentence, James McGonagle will face justice for his crimes.”
Legal Proceedings and Sentencing
McGonagle fled the scene but was apprehended the following day. In November, he pleaded guilty to attempted kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child. Despite facing a maximum sentence of 15 years, he was ultimately sentenced to seven years in prison last week. Upon his release, he will be required to register as a sex offender, as per officials.
Response from McGonagle’s Attorney
An attorney representing McGonagle did not provide an immediate comment on the sentencing.
