Alright, so like, all lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge are shut down in both directions because of some crazy incident involving a sailboat. Yeah, you heard that right. A sailboat crashed into the base of the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday evening, and now emergency crews are all over the place trying to deal with the aftermath. Talk about a chaotic situation, right?
According to the NYPD, the sailboat in question was the Mexican navy ship Cuauhtémoc. Apparently, they were doing some sailing maneuver during a training cruise when things went south and they ended up smacking right into the bridge. Ouch. Reports are coming in that at least three people have serious injuries, with a bunch of others having minor injuries. The bridge is completely closed off, and emergency management officials are scrambling to figure out the extent of the damage caused by the collision.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is on his way to the scene to check things out. The ship had been docked at Pier 17 of the South Street Seaport Museum and was open for tours over the weekend. The museum shared that the ship was built in Spain back in 1981. With Fleet Week just around the corner, it looks like the Mexican Navy decided to give New Yorkers a little preview of what’s to come. The tall training ship ARM Cuauhtémoc is open for free tours, so if you’re in the area, you might want to swing by and take a look. Who knows, you might even catch a glimpse of some navy action up close.
