Dr. Derrick Todd, a well-known doctor in the Boston area, has been charged with sexually assaulting over 200 of his former patients. The Middlesex County District Attorney announced that Todd was indicted by a grand jury on rape charges after allegedly assaulting two women during examinations at the Charles River Medical Associates in Framingham, Mass.
Allegations of Assault
The two women reported that the examinations conducted by Todd went beyond what is considered normal, with one of them experiencing so much pain that she screamed for him to stop. Despite her pleas, Todd allegedly continued the exam. The second patient claimed she did not consent to the specific examination, but Todd proceeded against her wishes.
Legal Proceedings
During his arraignment at Middlesex County Superior Court, Todd pleaded not guilty to the two rape charges and was held on $10,000 bail. As part of his bail conditions, he was ordered to surrender his passport, have no contact with his alleged victims, and relinquish all medical licenses.
Past Allegations and Civil Claims
The alleged abuse by Todd dates back to 2010 but only came to light in 2023 following anonymous complaints to Brigham and Women’s Faulkner Hospital, where Todd had worked for 14 years. Over 200 former patients have accused him of performing unnecessary pelvic floor therapy, breast examinations, testicular examinations, and rectal examinations.
Attorneys representing 180 of Todd’s former patients believe that the two rape charges are just the beginning of his legal troubles. They argue that these criminal charges support the civil claims being pursued on behalf of the victims, emphasizing the abuse of power and trust by a doctor for personal gratification.
Hospital Involvement and Legal Action
The hospital has also been named as a defendant in a class-action lawsuit, accused of being aware of the abuse and failing to intervene. Todd voluntarily stopped his medical practice in Massachusetts in September 2023 and was subsequently fired from the hospital in July 2024.
As the legal proceedings against Dr. Derrick Todd continue, the case highlights the importance of holding individuals accountable for their actions, especially those in positions of authority and trust.
In the midst of this distressing news, it’s essential to remember that the courage of the victims coming forward is commendable. Their bravery in speaking out against abuse serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting survivors and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Let us all strive to create a culture where such misconduct is not tolerated, and where the safety and well-being of all individuals are paramount.
