The New York town superintendent who accused of shooting a DoorDash delivery driver who was apparently lost while trying to drop off an order was indicted last week by a grand jury. John Reilly, the highway superintendent for the town of Chester, has been charged in the May 2 shooting of the delivery driver. The incident took place around 10 p.m. on Valerie Drive when the DoorDash driver had trouble finding the correct delivery address.
What Happened That Night
The DoorDash worker went door-to-door, asking for directions in hopes of tracking down the right home. Eventually, he arrived at Reilly’s house, where the 48-year-old instructed him to leave his property. However, things took a turn for the worse when, after turning to walk away, Reilly allegedly fired “multiple shots” at the delivery man, with one bullet hitting him in the back and causing serious physical injuries. Surveillance video obtained by News 12 captured the moment Reilly stepped out of his home and fired multiple shots from his front yard, one of which struck the driver.
The Fallout
Officials have called for Reilly to resign from his position with the town of Chester following the incident. Chester Town Supervisor Brandon Holdridge expressed deep concern over the situation and wished the driver a full recovery. However, the town government has no authority over Reilly’s future as he is an elected official, and the local police department has recused itself from the investigation due to the involvement of a town official. DoorDash also released a statement expressing devastation over the violence and promising to cooperate with law enforcement in the investigation.
