So, like, the Mets totally had a chance to score against Arizona all night long. And guess what? They failed miserably in a 4-3 loss, which was only their second loss of the season at Citi Field. Talk about a bummer, right?

As if trailing by three runs heading into the bottom of the ninth wasn’t bad enough, the Diamondbacks had to go and add two more runs to their lead in the top of the ninth. But hey, the Mets weren’t ready to throw in the towel just yet. They had one more rally left in them.

It all started with Tyrone Taylor leading off the bottom of the inning with his first homer of the season against Justin Martinez. That cut the deficit to just two runs. And then Francisco Lindor, who was on base three times that night, walked to bring up Juan Soto, who also walked. The bases were loaded when Pete Alonso got drilled on a 2-2 pitch by Ryan Thompson. Ouch.

But then Mark Vientos, who had homered earlier in the game, struck out. Talk about a missed opportunity, right? Jesse Winker, who pinch-hit for Starling Marte, fouled a ball off his foot, which somehow turned into a run-scoring groundout. It was a weird play, but it got the job done.

With runners on second and third, Jeff McNeil got the count to 3-1 before he was intentionally walked. And then Francisco Alvarez grounded to third to end the game. Tough break for the Mets.

To make matters worse, Ryne Stanek had another rough outing, giving up the lead in the seventh inning. The right-hander just couldn’t catch a break. But hey, at least right-hander Huascar Brazobán tossed two scoreless innings as the opener. That’s something to be happy about, right?

Brandon Waddell took over in the third inning, making his first MLB appearance since 2021 after pitching in Asia for the last three years. He did a solid job, too, shutting down the Diamondbacks lineup for 4 ¹/₃ innings and striking out four batters.

But then Stanek came in and things went south. He gave up three consecutive two-out hits to the Diamondbacks, including a two-run pinch-hit single that put Arizona ahead 2-1. Not a great night for Stanek, that’s for sure.

And to top it all off, the Mets couldn’t get anything going offensively. They were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Not a great stat to have, huh?

In the end, the Mets just couldn’t get it done. It was a tough loss, but hey, there’s always tomorrow, right? Hopefully, they can bounce back in the next game and get back on track. Until then, it’s back to the drawing board for the Amazin’s.
