Snowfall Blankets NYC and NJ on First Day of Winter, Arctic Temperatures in Store for Christmas
New Yorkers and New Jersey residents awoke to a winter wonderland on the first official day of the season as snow blanketed the region. The National Weather Service reported around 2 inches of snow had fallen in many parts of the city, including Central Park, while some areas in New Jersey saw up to 4 inches of snow.
Arctic Temperatures on the Horizon
As the snow continued to fall, temperatures were forecasted to barely rise above freezing on Saturday, plummeting to the teens at night. Sunday’s high is expected to reach only 25 degrees, with Monday barely cracking 32 degrees. Meteorologist Bill Goodman predicted the city could see an additional 2 to 3 inches of snow by the time the storm passes.
Slim Chance of a White Christmas
Looking ahead, there is a slight chance of snow showers early next week, but Goodman expressed doubt about the possibility of a white Christmas on Wednesday due to higher temperatures. “Maybe a little bit of a shot,” he commented.
Breaking Records
Last winter, New York City went over 700 days without significant snow accumulation, shattering the previous record of 400 days without snowfall. City officials are urging residents to stay off the roads to allow sanitation workers to efficiently operate salt spreaders and keep the streets safe.

As a lifelong New Yorker, I’ve always had a love-hate relationship with snow. On one hand, it transforms the bustling city into a serene winter wonderland, but on the other, it brings chaos to the streets and disrupts daily life. Waking up to the first snowfall of the season always fills me with a sense of nostalgia, reminding me of childhood snowball fights and building snowmen in Central Park.
However, this year’s snowfall feels different, almost magical, as it coincides with the beginning of winter and the anticipation of Christmas. The sight of snowflakes gently falling from the sky, covering the city in a blanket of white, is a reminder of the beauty and unpredictability of nature.
While the forecast for Arctic temperatures and more snow may dampen some spirits, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement at the prospect of a white Christmas. The chance of seeing snow on Christmas Day, even if slim, fills me with hope and wonder, like a scene from a classic holiday movie.
So, as I watch the snowflakes dance outside my window, I’m reminded of the simple joys that winter brings and the magic of the holiday season. Whether it’s the crunch of snow underfoot or the sight of Christmas lights twinkling in the snow, there’s something truly special about this time of year. Let’s embrace the snow, the cold, and the magic of the season, for it’s a fleeting moment of beauty in our hectic lives.
