Markham Mayor Seeks Presidential Pardon Before Biden’s Term Ends

The mayor of Markham, Roger Agpawa, is making headlines as he seeks a presidential pardon from President Joe Biden before his term ends on January 20. Agpawa, a convicted felon, is determined to move forward positively from his past and fully restore his rights as a citizen of the United States.

Agpawa’s Conviction and Redemption Journey

In 1999, Agpawa was convicted of federal mail fraud, resulting in a sentence of three years’ probation, $20,000 in restitution, and community service. Despite his past, Agpawa is determined to show the voters of Markham, who knowingly elected him, that he is committed to serving his community with integrity.

“I cannot live in that space – but I acknowledge that space,” Agpawa stated. “You serve your sentence, pay restitution, and then have to go above and beyond to show who you are.”

Seeking Presidential Pardon and Support

Now, Agpawa is seeking a pardon from President Biden to restore his full rights as a citizen, emphasizing that a conviction should not be a lifelong sentence. He has also reached out to other politicians for support in his quest for clemency.

“Whether it’s granted to me today or tomorrow, this is something that does not go away …clemency across the country has to be fixed,” Agpawa expressed.

Reflections on Clemency and Future Goals

As President Biden recently pardoned 39 Americans, including his son Hunter, Agpawa remains hopeful for the possibility of redemption. He is currently seeking his third term as mayor of Markham and believes that once a sentence is served, individuals should have the opportunity to move forward without continued stigma.

“After you serve your sentence – it should stop—it should not continue to be a life sentence,” Agpawa emphasized.

In a world where second chances are often hard to come by, Agpawa’s journey serves as a reminder that redemption and forgiveness are fundamental aspects of the American justice system. His dedication to his community and his unwavering spirit in seeking a pardon showcase the resilience and hope that define the human experience.
